BACKGROUND: The group First Call was originally formed in the mid-1980's. It consisted then of Marty McCall, Bonnie Keen, and Melodie (or Mel) Tunney. The three members had done a lot of BGV (background vocals) for Contemporary Christian artists, most notably Sandi Patti. They decided to market themselves as a ready-made vocal group for projects, then felt that God was leading them into a ministry of their own. Around 1989, Mel Tunney began to feel a desire for a different style of music, and she left the group yet remained good friends with Marty and Bonnie. She was replaced with Marabeth Jordon, also a studio background singer. Her style fit well with First Call's evolving style, and the group recorded some of their best music ever. Sadly, in 1994 it was revealed that Marabeth had been having an affair with a married Christian singer and had become pregnant by him. She quit First Call, and Marty and Bonnie felt sure that the group had ceased to exist. However, God had other plans! Through a series of steps, he helped the two remaining members recover and grow stronger, and eventually revealed to them that First Call would continue ... as a duo. Since then, Marty and Bonnie have recorded two projects as First Call, and each has done a solo project as well.
NEWS!February, 2001 I discovered that Bonnie has her own website! It is fantastic! You have to see it to believe it. All kinds of interesting info about her own life and career and ministry (as well as pictures of her family), and, of course, an insider's look at First Call! On her website she has information on the album that she and Marty are working on. It will be a choral arrangement that they can sing with church choirs, and it is based on the Greek word ecclesia, which is translated "church" in English but more generally means "The Gathering Place." I can't wait to hear it! November, 2000 I got an e-mail from Marty. He and Bonnie have been touring together and have also done some concerts with Dick and Mel Tunney. Also, he and Bonnie are recording some songs for a new album, but are shopping for a record company since Warner Alliance is no more! Keep checking here for more info!
